Who is the photographer?<\/strong>\u00a0<br>Why did he\/she make it? (intentions\/ reasons) <br>Who is it for? (audience) <br>How was it received? Deconstruct the narrative, concept and design&nbsp;<\/strong>of the book and apply theory above when considering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Book in hand: how does it feel? Smell, sniff the paper.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paper and ink: use of different paper\/ textures\/ colour or B&amp;W or both.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Format, size and orientation: portraiture\/ landscape\/ square\/ A5, A4, A3 \/ number of pages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Binding, soft\/hard cover. image wrap\/dust jacket. saddle stitch\/swiss binding\/ Japanese stab-binding\/ leperello<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cover: linen\/ card. graphic\/ printed image. embossed\/ debossed. letterpress\/ silkscreen\/hot-stamping.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Title: literal or poetic \/ relevant or intriguing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Narrative: what is the story\/ subject-matter. How is it told?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Structure and architecture: how design\/ repeating motifs\/ or specific features develops a concept or construct a narrative.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design and layout: image size on pages\/ single page, double-spread\/ images\/ grid, fold- outs\/ inserts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Editing and sequencing: selection of images\/ juxtaposition of photographs\/ editing process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Images and text: are they linked? Introduction\/ essay\/ statement by artists or others.&nbsp; Use of captions (if any.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-a8644ec5-928f-4a2b-a1f9-bff88e4037ef\"><strong>UNDERSTANDING PHOTOBOOKS:<\/strong><em><br>NARRATIVE, EDITING, SEQUENCING<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>DESIGN, FORM, FUNCTION&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-768f5345-47e1-4c97-a886-bb77f5ad403a\">Earlier in the academic year we looked at narrative in photography. Click on the blog post below to refresh your knowledge and understanding and revisit some of the theories around visual storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hautlieucreative.co.uk\/photo21al\/2020\/09\/13\/narrative-and-photography\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Narrative and Photography<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-c69f9205-8b59-4bd6-a7e1-c5f2f47872fb\">Narrative \u2013 summary<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-0b63f295-b9e5-4c6f-81b3-d24a9bdf0f02\">Narrative is essentially the way a story is told. For example you can tell different narratives of the same story. It is a very subjective process and there is no right or wrong. Whether or not your photographic story is any good is another matter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-082e7ef4-9270-458a-9a29-86f1579c04f3\">Narrative is constructed when you begin to create relationships between images (and\/or text) and present more than two images together. Your selection of images (editing) and the order of how these images appear on the pages (sequencing) contributes significantly to the construction of the narrative. So too, does the structure and design of the photo-zine or photobook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-0e51c99c-77e2-4f66-a611-51e9a100aa13\">However, it is essential that you identity what your story is first before considering how you wish to tell it. Planning and research are also essential to understanding your subject and there are steps you can take in order to make it successful. The following year Grove Press published&nbsp;<em>The Americans<\/em>&nbsp;in New York with an introduction by American writer, Jack Kerouac (the book was released in January 1960).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-a6173993-19cc-4622-a320-abef4f284b82\"><strong>Robert Frank:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nga.gov\/features\/robert-frank\/the-americans-1955-57.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Americans<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-5edacf68-b0e9-46f4-b1b3-921be660fb87\">Like Frank\u2019s earlier books, the sequence of 83 pictures in&nbsp;<em>The Americans<\/em>&nbsp;is non-narrative and nonlinear; instead it uses thematic, formal, conceptual and linguistic devices to link the photographs.&nbsp;<em>The Americans<\/em>&nbsp;displays a deliberate structure, an emphatic narrator, and what Frank called a&nbsp;<strong>\u2018distinct and intense order\u2019<\/strong>&nbsp;that amplified and tempered the individual pictures.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\" id=\"block-8f49509b-05c9-46d5-896f-82889bb4f724\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hautlieucreative.co.uk\/photo21al\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2020\/09\/C12010_wss.jpg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is C12010_wss.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p id=\"block-51155957-5ed3-4135-a66d-186c793c83e6\"><strong>PHOTO-ESSAY:<\/strong>&nbsp;The life of a country doctor in Colorado\u2019s Rocky Mountains<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-222a0bd9-9970-461a-8b52-05e5bd721373\"><strong>W. Eugene Smith:<\/strong><em>&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.life.com\/history\/w-eugene-smiths-landmark-photo-essay-country-doctor\/\" target=\"_blank\">Country Doctor<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\" id=\"block-7709ffd0-a1f3-4f99-a853-08f9e70cb492\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hautlieucreative.co.uk\/photo21al\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2020\/09\/5329736e12ea6.jpg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is 5329736e12ea6.jpg\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cA photo is a small voice, at best, but sometimes \u2013 just sometimes \u2013 one photograph or a group of them can lure our senses into awareness. Much depends upon the viewer; in some, photographs can summon enough emotion to be a catalyst to thought\u201dW. Eugne Smith<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-25f50bd0-80b2-4db1-82ca-a1a719de5417\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.magnumphotos.com\/photographer\/w-eugene-smith\/\">W. Eugene Smith<\/a>&nbsp;compared his mode of working to that of a playwright; the powerful narrative structures of his photo essays set a new benchmark for the genre. His series,&nbsp;<em>The Country Doctor<\/em>, shot on assignment for&nbsp;<em>Life Magazine<\/em>&nbsp;in 1948, documents the everyday life of Dr Ernest Guy Ceriani, a GP tasked with providing 24-hour medical care to over 2,000 people in the small town of Kremmling, in the Rocky Mountains. The story was important at the time for drawing attention to the national shortage of country doctors and the impact of this on remote communities.
