photoshoot 4 plan

For my fourth photoshoot, I am going to take the opportunity of being off Island to try and take some more images for my project that may be different to what I may find over here. As Jersey is only small I am limited to what I can take images of meaning, being somewhere else may give me more options.

Photoshoot 6 – Elements

This is the final shoot I did, in which I created a range of setup’s in order to produce images that represent the different elements of fire, water, earth and air.

I think that the water and fire images turned out the best and along with my other shoots I maintained the scheme of muted colours and monochrome to ensure that they will all link together when creating my photo book.

I think that this is one of my best images due to the colours being muted but the flame still staying the most vibrant and looking as though it’s coming through the image itself. I also like how a meaning can be given to the image, making it more subjective and personal to the viewer.

This is one of my best images due to the composition of the image, with the reflection of lights making it seem as though there’s electricity connecting the pieces in the water.

Lastly, I selected this photo as one of my best images due to the composition and colouring of it. Due to the muted colours it helps the whites to stand out more against it, which is shown more explicitly through the flower covering a small bit of the card.

Mindmap, Moodboard + Development of Ideas

Observe, Seek, Challenge

Mindmap

Initial ideas:

  • Habits
  • Environment
  • Gender roles
  • Rules of observation
  • Body and perceptions – Beauty standards
  • Opposites
  • Family dynamics
  • Street photography – people interacting
  • Analog photomanipulation
  • Movement – Animation? – mixed media

Possible artists:

  • Mickalene Thomas – Collage stuff
  • Rinko Kawauchi – ideas of finding beauty in the mundane
  • Luke Fowler – video – Movement

Ideas:

My initial idea was to make a Zine based of Rinko Kawauchi, observing the natural world and beauty – I enjoy analog photomanipulation and feel that collage would work well with the theme of body perceptions. I also want to explore the technique of mixed media animation – making frames that flow out of photographs to create video.

Observe– How do we as a society classify something as being ‘beautiful’? Seek– What do I find an aesthetic value in that is unconventional? Challenge– Create images based off this.

The aesthetic I wanted to achieve in the project.

Looking closer at approaches to mixed media animation and photomanipulation.

Photoshoot plan St. Aubin

Where:

Plan:

  • What– The objects I will photograph are mainly mam-made during this photoshoot, as I explore St. Aubin which has elements of the harbour, building, shops and beach, there are many different subjects within that are but main ones I will photographs are definitely going to be boats and buildings.
  • Who- I don’t want to photograph strangers, but I occasionally might use my friend which is joining me on this photoshoot to stage some photographs of us exploring this area.
  • Where– St. Aubin which is a popular tourist destination, this area consists of the harbour near the buildings and the beach which is located near, it is a popular tourist point as it consists of many beautiful views on the bay as well as it involving buildings imbedded with history.
  • When– During day time, when the sun is near to setting, because of its location the sun setts behind the building, therefore it would need to photograph the building before the sun sets, however when it does start setting, the golden hour might enhance the contrast of the sun and shadows.
  • How– When photographing in-between the building , and closer to the subjects I should increase shutter speed, to capture more detail and photographs don’t come out blurry. however when photographing a higher contrast between lights and darks I might focus more on ISO to ensure the photographs don’t come out over or under exposed.
  • Why– As I haven’t lived here my whole life, I was once a tourist myself, therefore I want to reconnect with how I would see the place I’m so familiar with now in a different way. In this photoshoot I want to challenge myself to see the place in a different way, as well as show through the photographs that through a limited space we can still seek for the beauty within it, even if we are used to it.

photoshoot three

For my third photoshoot I again focused on vehicles and buildings. During my photoshoot, I found that yellow and red were the best colours to photograph as they came up the best in the images and were very bright and vibrant. In this shoot I also ended up photographing a lot of blues in different tones to show a contrast.

editing

final images:

Overall, I am pleased with this shoot and this that all of the colours contrast to each other especially within the pictures. I like how they all have a variety of colours within them and they all hold a similar feel.

Photo shoot 5

All these images are from Tamara Lichtenstein’s collection on Flickr page.

mood board

For my 5th photoshoot the photographs are going to be taken in multiple places, the first place being on the 5 mile road, focusing on a model being in the middle of the road with a cloudy sky like the images in the top left hand corner of the mood board.

My photos

I am happy with the way this shoot came out however I waited to long for the sun to go down and find the images too dark, when it comes to the editing process I am going to make them brighter and more vibrant to emphasize the sunset more as the camera didn’t capture it well, I plan on editing these images on Lightroom and possibly photoshop.

The second place I am going to be taking the photos is on St. Brelardes beach whilst the sky is getting darker my models will be in dresses on the sand with the sea behind them I am going to bring with me a portable light to illuminate them allowing the photographs to be clear whilst the photos are being taken, I am also going to experiment with using coloured gel film over the top of the light to create a coloured effect like Tamara Lichtenstein does which is seen in the bottom of the mood board.

My photos

With this photoshoot I really struggled with the lighting in the sense that the lamp I bought didn’t light up enough of the water so you can’t really tell it was taken on a beach, I am pleased with the way the colored gel lit up red and was really effective, another issue I had was trying to adjust the camera to allow as much light in without it being so shaky,I should have used a tripod to capture these images.

The third place I am going to be taking photos is in a bathroom using coloured light to create a moody setting of the photographs I am going to do self portraits using a tripod of me and my identical twin sister in between a shower screen to create a mirrored effect this is going to be an interpretation of one of Tamara Lichtenstein photos where she has mesh fabric over one of her models creating an almost mirrored effect. I will also be taking photos of my friends together looking in the same direction into the camera and come in a car with clouds of smoke.

My photos

I am pleased with the outcome of this shoot I find the images eye catching and I think with some editing done to them they would be really strong I created the red light by placing red gel plastic in front of the light I was using. The top photo looks like a person has been duplicated as me and my twin sister are both looking the same way, the other images were taken in a shower focusing on the male gaze and how women can be seen showering through the gaze.

Photo shoot 4

For my 4th photoshoot this is also inspired by Tamara Lichtenstein and a book she created on Blurb, I am going to create my photos in a pool in the late afternoon there for the sun isn’t too bright so there will be less glare on the water, I will get my models in white sheer dresses, like Liechtenstein’s models are wearing I am going to experiment with different angles and poses some will be on the model submerged in water others of them coming out of the water, whilst taking the photos and experiment with the lighting as the pool lights are able to change colour this will allow me to change the atmosphere and feeling of the images.

Observe, Seek and Challenge- Photoshoot 4 Edits

Selection for Editing

green- will edit, yellow- might decide to edit (if more edits are needed), red- won’t edit

Editing in Lightroom

the settings for the editing- used similar settings for each picture

I made every picture black and white, lowered the exposure, creating a gloomier mood. I enhanced the contrast of the images by changing the contrast, highlights and shadows as well as slightly increasing the texture and clarity of the photographs.

Final Edits

I think the editing was effective, since it improved the quality of the images as well as made them much more similar to my inspiration, Francesca Woodman. The increasing of the contrast made the details stand out even more which caused the pictures to gain more grain and texture.

Photoshoot 5 – Masks

This shoot aims to show how we ‘bluff’ or deceive our opponents by masking our emotions. While having different meanings behind the use of mask, this shoot was inspired by the conceptual artist Gillian Wearing and her mask identity photos.

This shoot was created at home, using a small game set up as well as a mirror. Since I don’t have the money to be able to buy the high quality prosthetic masks that Wearing uses in her photos, I settled for a plain white mask which still turned out well and also showcases what I had intended to do so.

I think that the muted tones in this image really help to create the dramatic effect I was going for. I also really like the composition of this photo as it links well to the main idea I had for bluffing, especially with the way one of the cards is covering the mouth of the mask.

Similarly to the photo above, I really like the composition of the image, however they differ due to the angle and colouring of them. This image gives off a more dejected feel to it, creating a sense of sadness for the viewer but ultimately still showcasing an exaggerated perspective of bluffing.

I selected this photo as one of my best images due to the composition. I think that the photo creates lots of different meanings behind it that can be up to the viewers interpretation, for example it could be symbolism for how shes changing the game, making the photo interesting to look at.

Lastly, i personally think that this is one of my best images as the colour, composition and overall final feel of the photo turned out well. The darkness and contrast helps to create a dramatic feel to it, while the placement of her hand on the mask makes it seem as though she’s shushing it which links back to bluffing.

Making final selections

I have made my final selections for printing. I am no longer including images from York, St Malo, Jersey, and London. This will allow me to simplify my idea and therefore have higher quality of work. I have narrowed the total number down to 76. I am going to look into buying a picture album that will accommodate this many images, but if I cannot find one, I will need to trim this down further.
